The great black-backed gull Larus marinus , mistakenly called greater black-backed gull by some, is the largest member of the gull family. Described by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology as "the king of the Atlantic waterfront", it is a very aggressive hunter, pirate and scavenger. It breeds on the European and North American coasts and islands of the North Atlantic and is fairly sedentary, though some move farther south or inland to large lakes or reservoirs. The adult great black-backed gull has a white head, neck and underparts, dark grey wings and back, pink legs and yellow bill. The great black-backed gull was one of the many species originally described by Carl Linnaeus in his 10th edition of Systema Naturae , and it still bears its original name of Larus marinus.

Torquay United will go to Southport of the National North division in the last 16 of the FA Trophy after beating fellow National League side Boreham Wood in their delayed fourth round tie on the northern outskirts of London. The record books will show a trashing but this was far from that - and goals two, three and four all came in the last 10 minutes with the home side finally beaten down. Ahead of Torquay's return to league action at Notts County on Saturday, the win will be a huge fillip for Gary Johnson's team, who - although still eight points clear at the top of the table - hadn't played a competitive game since losing to Yeovil Town on January 2.
