Advancements in mammography screening technology have brought about the evolution of 3D mammography with breast tomosynthesis. These limitations allow for some breast cancers to hide behind healthy tissue, while normal tissues, stacked on top of each other, may create a shadowy or cloudy image which can appear to be cancer. With 3D mammography, the images of the breast are taken in slices which present a more three-dimensional visual of the breast. The radiologist can see all around and between the breast tissues with greater clarity than ever before. To learn more about what to expect on your visit please click here.

Our goal was to assess the value of surgical excision of benign papillomas of the breast diagnosed on percutaneous core biopsy by determining the frequency of upgrade to malignancies and high risk lesions on a final surgical pathology. We reviewed 67 patients who had biopsies yielding benign papilloma and underwent subsequent surgical excision. Surgical pathology of the excised lesions was compared with initial core biopsy pathology results. Our data suggests that surgical excision is warranted with core pathology of benign papilloma. While considered a benign diagnosis, intraductal papillomas of the breast diagnosed with percutaneous core biopsy have traditionally been managed by complete surgical excision to carefully examine the entire papilloma and adjacent breast.
